Etchant according to WECK
WECK etchant is a product mainly used in metallography and scientific laboratories to visualize the microstructure of pure titanium and titanium alloys. It is an aqueous-alcoholic solution of ammonium hydrogendifluoride.
The chemical reaction of the etchant according to WECK is based on the reaction of ammonium hydrogendifluoride with the metal surfaces. This reaction makes alpha and beta solid solutions visible in different colors, while hybrid crystals, nitrite needles, O2-rich diffusion zones and the beta phase remain unchanged and provide a white contrast.
During the etching process, it may be necessary to wait several minutes until a good etch is achieved. Sufficient etching is achieved when the colored skin on the metal surface changes from brown to blue. Dry etching should then be applied. The product should be stored and used in plastic bottles as ammonium hydrogendifluoride can corrode glass.
In summary, the WECK etchant is ideal for analysing and visualizing the microstructure of titanium and titanium alloys.
