Iron(III) Chloride 2 %

Iron(III) Chloride 2% is a chemical solution containing 2% iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) in water or other solvent base. Ferric chloride is a yellow-brown salt that is readily soluble in water and is used in a variety of applications.

In histology, ferric chloride 2% is often used as a mordant in staining methods such as Verhoeff staining to highlight elastic fibers in tissue specimens. The mordant forms a blue-black complex with hematoxylin that makes elastic fibers visible.

Iron(III)-chloride 2 % is also used in analytical applications, for example as a reagent for the determination of phenols and tannins or for the quantification of phosphates.

In addition, iron(III)-chloride is used in water and wastewater treatment to remove suspended solids and improve water quality. Here, the iron(III) chloride is used as a flocculant, which binds dirt particles in the water and thus facilitates the removal of these particles.
