GALLAY’s Stain (Stock Solution III)
GALLYAS stain (stock solution III) is an aqueous solution containing ammonium nitrate, silver nitrate, tungstatesilicic acid hydrate and formaldehyde. In combination with stock solutions I and II, it is used for histological studies, especially for imaging neurofibrillary tangles and other degenerative changes in nervous tissue.
The chemical mode of operation of stock solution III is based on the reduction of silver ions by tungstate silica hydrate, producing elemental silver. Ammonium nitrate serves as the catalyst, while silver nitrate is the silver source. Formaldehyde acts as a fixative and stabilizes the stained structures.
The special suitability of stock solution III lies in its role in producing a high-contrast and selective staining image of neurodegenerative structures in histological specimens. It is particularly suitable for the examination of nervous tissue and for the identification of Alzheimer's-associated structures. By combining with Stock Solutions I and II, Stock Solution III enables precise analysis of the tissue specimens examined, targeting specific issues in histology and not intended for general staining.
