KIT: Colour etchant according to BERAHA I
Color etchant according to BERAHA I consists of ammonium hydrogen difluoride (NH₄HF₂), potassium disulfite (K₂S₂O₅) and dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl 6 %). It is mainly used in metallography and scientific laboratories. This product is suitable for the examination of mild and low alloy steels, martensitic and bainitic microstructures, ferritic Cr steels, manganese hard steels, and for the evaluation of brazed joints with brass solder.
The chemical reactions and properties of the color etchant are based on the interactions of the various components with each other. Ammonium hydrogen difluoride forms fluoride ions (F-) and ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) in aqueous solution, causing an etching reaction on metal surfaces. Potassium disulfite serves as a reducing agent and stabilizes the system. The dilute hydrochloric acid helps in the formation of fluoride ions and assists in the intensity of the etching reaction.
The solution is applied by wet etching for 5-20 seconds. After preparation, the solution can be kept for 1-2 hours. It is important to store the stock solution in a plastic bottle because the color etchant has a glass etching effect.
The application of the color etchant according to BERAHA I makes it possible to visualize a wide variety of microstructural properties in the treated metals. This facilitates the investigation and evaluation of materials to optimize their mechanical properties and performance.
