Congo red 1 %, aqueous
The 1% aqueous Congo Red solution is a bright red solution used in histology and cytology to stain amyloid deposits and cellular structures. Congo red is a synthetic azo dye characterized by its ability to selectively stain amyloid deposits.
In histologic diagnosis, Congo red is commonly used to identify amyloidosis, a group of diseases characterized by abnormal deposits of amyloid proteins in various organs and tissues. Congo red staining binds to the beta-sheet structure of amyloid fibrils and results in a characteristic red to apple green birefringency under polarized light.
