ROSSMANN’s Fixative
ROSSMAN fixative, a combination of alcohol-saturated picric acid and stabilized formaldehyde, finds its application mainly in in vitro diagnostics. It is particularly valued in histology, where it is used to preserve and solidify biological tissues in preparation for microscopic examination.
The special suitability of ROSSMAN fixative lies in its ability to effectively solidify protein structures in tissue samples, resulting in high morphological detail. This is essential for accurate and reliable histological or cytological diagnosis.
At the chemical level, ROSSMAN fixative consists of alcohol-saturated picric acid and formaldehyde. Picric acid, a strong acid, denatures proteins, while formaldehyde acts as an aldehyde, forming covalent bonds between protein molecules and other cellular components.
During application, ROSSMAN fixative enters into a reaction with tissue samples, denaturing and solidifying proteins. This results in a stable and well-preserved tissue structure that is optimal for microscopic observation and allows accurate diagnosis.
