Sörensen buffer, also known as PBS buffer (Phosphate Buffered Saline), is an aqueous buffer solution commonly used in biology, biochemistry and histology. Stock solutions A and B are two components needed to make the complete PBS buffer.

Batch solution A contains potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4). Stock solution B contains sodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) and sodium chloride (NaCl). By mixing the two stock solutions in different ratios, Sörensen buffers can be prepared with different pH values ranging from about pH 5.8 to 8.0.

The main function of Sörensen buffers is to keep the pH of samples stable during experiments to avoid changes in chemical and enzymatic activity. PBS buffers are used in a variety of applications, including cell culture media, immunohistochemistry, protein solutions, and as a rinse or wash solution for tissue and cell samples. Adjusting the pH can be important to achieve the optimal conditions for certain biological processes or reactions.
