Silver Nitrate 2 %, buffered

Silver nitrate 2 %, buffered, offers a wide range of applications in histology and microbiology. The solution consists of 20.41 g silver nitrate dissolved in 1000 ml acetate buffer pH 3.6.

Main application is Warthin-Starry silver staining for the detection of spirochaetes and Bacillus piliformis in histological sections. Thanks to the higher concentration of silver nitrate, the solution provides more intense staining and improved sensitivity.

The chemical mode of operation is based on the reduction of silver ions to elemental silver by reducing substances in the target structures. The acetate buffer provides a stable pH of 3.6, which is required for optimal staining performance.

Compared to unbuffered silver nitrate solutions or those with different buffer capacities, the 2% buffered silver nitrate solution provides higher reproducibility and better staining results. The increased sensitivity and improved staining quality allow more accurate identification of target structures and facilitate the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
