Mercury(II) Chloride Solution, aqueous saturated
A saturated aqueous sublimate solution refers to a solution in which mercury(II) chloride, also called sublimate, is dissolved in water. Mercury(II) chloride is a toxic, white solid that has been used in various applications in the past. It is important to note that mercury(II) chloride is toxic and care should be taken when handling it.
In histology, saturated aqueous sublimate solution has been used as a base to prepare various fixatives. Mercury(II) chloride can fix tissues quickly and effectively by cross-linking proteins, thus preserving their structure and composition.
Mercury-based fixation provides exceptionally good results in some specific applications, which is why it continues to be used despite its toxicity and environmental impact.
Some of the applications include:
1. Testicular biopsies: fixation with sublimate solution preserves the fine structure of spermatogenesis cells in testicular tissue and allows detailed analysis of these cells.
2. Nerve tissue: fixation with sublimate solution can ensure better preservation of myelin sheaths and axons in nerve tissue in some cases.
3. Parasitology: mercury-based fixation can be used in the study of parasites such as Plasmodium spp. (malaria pathogen) to visualize their fine structures.
4. Cilia and flagella: Fixation with sublimate solution can help to better visualize the structure and organization of cilia and flagella in cells.
