Rosin, also known as rosin or resin, is a natural resin obtained from pines and other conifer species. It is a mixture of various resin acids, especially abietic acid, and has the chemical formula C19H29COOH. It is yellow to black and has a characteristic resinous odor.
In its original, solid form, rosin has a glassy consistency and is generally insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol, ether, and other organic solvents.
In histology, rosin is used as an embedding agent. It has the advantage of being solid at room temperature but becomes liquid when heated, which allows good penetration into the tissue. In addition, it has a relatively low melting point, which facilitates handling.
In other applications, rosin is used as an ingredient in solder, adhesives, varnishes, soaps and many other products.
