Etching agent acc. to BARDOLLE and MOREAU
The Bardolle and Moreau etchant consists of a saturated ammonium thiocyanate solution used in metallography and scientific laboratories. It is excellent for determining grain orientations on mild steels by electrolytic etching. The chemical ingredients of the solution are water and ammonium thiocyanate (CAS No.: 1762-95-4, NH4SCN).
A chemical reaction in the etching process leads to the selective formation of iron(III) thiocyanate complex, which shows distinctive colorations on the examined steel samples. These colorations make it possible to visualize grain orientations and represent an important examination method in the steel industry. The chemical properties of the product lie in the high solubility of ammonium thiocyanate in water, the ability to form complexes with iron(III) and the strong etching effect on the surface of steel samples. As a result, clear grain orientations can be visualized on the surface of metallic samples.
