Etchant according to WAZAU
WAZAU macroetching agent is designed for use in metallography and scientific laboratories. It is particularly suitable for visualizing cold deformations caused by stamping, bending, pressing or upsetting. The mixture consists of hydrochloric acid fuming HCl, CAS No.: 7647-01-0) and copper dichloride dihydrate (CuCl2-2H2O, CAS No.: 10125-13-0) in aqueous solution.
Chemical reactions and properties of the product can be attributed to the individual ingredients. Hydrochloric acid is a strong caustic that is reactive and corrosive, while copper dichloride dihydrate acts as a Lewis acid. When combined with deionized water, it produces an effective single solution that attacks specific metal surfaces, making various phases and structures visible.
Possible results of using this etchant include visualization of cold deformations, crack structures or grain boundaries, depending on the metal and metal alloy being processed. The effectiveness of the etchant depends on factors such as exposure time or concentration of the solution.
