Acetone
Acetone is a colorless, highly flammable liquid with a characteristic sweet odor. It is an organic solvent used in many industrial and laboratory applications. The chemical formula of acetone is C3H6O and it belongs to the ketone group.
In histology, acetone is commonly used as a degreasing agent and clearing agent. It helps remove fats and lipids from tissue specimens to allow better penetration of staining solutions and other reagents. Acetone can also be used to remove kerosene or other embedding materials from microscopic sections before they are stained.
In other applications, acetone serves as a solvent for many organic compounds such as resins, plastics, paints, varnishes and adhesives. It is also used in the chemical industry to produce compounds such as acetone cyanohydrin, which serves as an intermediate in the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA).
In the cosmetics industry, acetone is a common solvent in nail polish removers because it effectively dissolves the polymers in nail polish.
