Alcoholic Nitric Acid ~ 1 % (Nital)
Alcoholic nitric acid 1% (ital) is an established product in metallography and scientific laboratories. It consists of ethanol (CAS No.: 64-17-5) and nitric acid (CAS No.: 7697-37-2).
The solution is suitable for a wide range of applications, especially for etching the microstructure of ferritic steels. In addition, it is universally applicable as a microetching agent for unalloyed and low-alloy steels, quenched and tempered steels, cast irons, in abrasive burn testing and in pearl tonguing. The etching time varies from seconds to minutes, depending on the material and the desired result.
The combination of ethanol as the solvent and nitric acid as the etchant produces a chemical reaction that can be approximately described as G2H50H + HNO3,
-> C2H5ON02 + H20. This reaction can selectively attack the steel surface, revealing the microstructure.
Depending on the application and the material, different results are obtained in terms of visibility of grain and phase boundaries, near-surface microstructural changes or other metallographic characteristics. Thereby, it is possible to reveal the microstructure in different ways and thus provide the user with detailed information about the material under investigation.
Overall, Alcoholic Nitric Acid 1% (Nital) offers a reliable method for microstructure analytical investigation of steel and ferrous materials.
