Chromic Acid 2 %
Chromic acid 2 % is a chemical solution mainly used in histology and cytology. It consists of chromic (VI) acid (H2CrO4) with a concentration of 2%. Chromic acid is a strong oxidizing agent and has numerous applications in laboratory work, especially in the preparation and staining of tissue specimens.
In histology, chromic acid 2% is often used as a stain to prepare tissue specimens and increase the binding ability of dyes. The staining effect of chromic acid allows for better staining of tissue specimens by breaking down specific molecules or structures in the cells, allowing for stronger binding of dyes. This results in improved visualization and differentiation of the various tissue components under the microscope.
Chromic acid 2% can also be used to clean glassware and as a catalyst in chemical reactions. However, it should be noted that chromic acid has a strong corrosive effect and should be used under strict safety precautions. In addition, chromium(VI) is classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic to reproduction, so careful handling and proper disposal of the chromic acid solution is required.
The 2% chromic acid solution is also used as a ready-to-use etchant in metallography for copper-aluminum alloys, nickel silver and bronzes. When applied to these materials, the chromic acid solution enables effective examination of microstructures, such as grain and phase boundaries.
