Acetic Acid 20 %
Acetic acid 20 %, consisting of a mixture of high-purity acetic acid and distilled water, is widely used in medical and scientific contexts. In histology, it serves as a fixation solution by stabilizing protein structures within tissue specimens, thus enabling detailed examination under the microscope. In scientific laboratories, it is used as a pH buffer and to adjust the pH in solutions.
At the molecular level, acetic acid (CH3COOH) consists of an acetyl group residue (CH3CO) and a hydroxyl residue (OH). When combined with water (H2O), it exists in ionized form as an acetate ion (CH3COO-) and hydronium ion (H3O+).The ratio of acetic acid to acetate determines the acid-base equilibrium and thus the pH of the solution.
The product is characterized by its ability to stabilize chemical bonds and thus retain structures and shapes in biological samples. The 20% solution is further diluted for many application and to achieve more precise and gentle reactions.
