Gold chloride solutions are used in histology as a reducing agent for staining and visualizing neurons and nerve fibers. It is mainly used in silver plating methods (Bielschowski, Gomori, Golgi, Fontana, and others) to visualize neurons and their processes, such as dendrites and axons.

Gold chloride binds to and reduces silver compounds applied to tissue samples during the staining method. This process results in the formation of visible silver grains that adhere to neuronal structures, allowing visualization of neurons and their connections. The resulting prepared tissue sections can then be examined under a microscope to analyze the morphology and arrangement of neurons and their processes.
