NYLANDER’s Reagent
NYLANDER reagent is a chemical solution used in microscopy and biochemistry to identify reducing sugars. It consists of sodium hydroxide, potassium sodium tartrate tetrahydrate, and bismuth(III) nitrate.
The use of NYLANDER reagent in histology is for the detection reaction for reducing sugars, in which these sugars are oxidized to colored end products. A special feature of this reagent is that it can detect not only monosaccharides, but also some disaccharides and polysaccharides.
Reaction with the NYLANDER reagent results in a characteristic black-brown coloration when reducing sugars are oxidized. The result is easily seen under the microscope, making the NYLANDER reagent a valuable tool in diagnostic histology.
