Picric acid mixture to detect austenite
Picric acid mixture for austenite imaging is a special solution in metallography for the study of metals, especially steels and alloys. It is used for coloring and visualization of various phases such as austenite in steels.
This mixture consists of picric acid, a strong nitric acid, ethanol as a solvent, which also stabilizes the solution and to improve the penetration of picric acid into the metal. Furthermore, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid are included in equal proportions to increase the etching power of the mixture and help adjust the pH of the solution.
