In histological preparation, one of the elementary steps is to extract water from the tissue sample and replace it with an embedding agent. Since water is removed by the action of alcohol, an intermediate medium (=intermediate medium) is then used, which mixes with both alcohol and the embedding agent (example: xylene when embedding in paraffin). Intermedia therefore prepare the treatment with the embedding substance.
