Hydrochloric acid 0.5% is a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid, a strong and colorless inorganic acid present in aqueous solution. It consists mainly of hydrogen chloride (HCl) and water (H2O).
In histology, hydrochloric acid 0.5% is often used as a component of staining reagents and to adjust the pH of solutions. The use of hydrochloric acid can optimize certain staining methods such as Gram staining, which is used to distinguish bacteria. In addition, hydrochloric acid can be used in histology to demineralize bone tissue.
