Iron(III)Chloride hexahydrate

Ferric chloride hexahydrate, chemically expressed as FeCl3-6H2O, is a versatile reagent in laboratory chemistry and scientific research. It is known for its strong oxidizing properties and its ability to act as a Lewis acid. These chemical properties allow its use in a variety of reactions, including the Fenton reaction, in which it is used to generate hydroxyl radicals.

In organic synthesis, ferric chloride hexahydrate is often used as a catalyst for Friedel-Crafts acylation, an important method for carbon-carbon bond formation. It can also be used to etch copper plates in printing, as it converts copper to copper(II) chloride.

The chemical formula of iron(III) chloride hexahydrate shows that each iron(III) chloride molecule is surrounded by six water molecules. These water molecules can be released when heated, resulting in a change in the physical and chemical properties of the product.
