Sodium Thiosulfate 2 %
The 2% sodium thiosulfate solution (Na2S2O3) is a faint yellowish aqueous solution used in various applications. Sodium thiosulfate is a salt that is readily soluble in water and acts as a reducing agent.
In histology and cytology, the 2% sodium thiosulfate solution is commonly used as a reducing agent for silver staining to remove excess silver nitrate and control color intensity. It is also used as a fixative in photography to remove unexposed silver halide and stabilize the image.
Sodium thiosulfate is also an ingredient in some medical applications, for example as an antidote for cyanide poisoning, because it binds and neutralizes cyanide by forming thiocyanate, which is then excreted through the kidneys. In aquaristics, sodium thiosulfate is used as a dechlorinating agent to remove chlorine from water and make it safer for fish and plants.
