Nitric acid 65%, a strong and oxidizing acid, is characterized by its wide range of applications. Due to its chemical composition (HNO3), it is able to react with a wide range of materials, which allows its use in a wide variety of fields. In histology, it serves as a starting solution for the preparation of decalcifying solutions, effectively removing mineralized tissue components. Its aggressive nature also allows it to be used as an effective macroetching agent for ferritic welded joints, as well as a deep etchant. It exposes cracks and enables grain surface etching on copper alloys in materialography.
